Perhaps I took the most laid-back approach to the 2005 Chicago marathon. As I always tell my running buddies John and Chuck, my goal is to be able to enjoy the last 1-mile stretch, remembering what it sounds, smells, and feels like. Though my muscles tightened up pretty badly at Mile 25 and I was not able to enjoy it as much as I would have like to, I do have the help of pictures and friends who supported me beforehand, whom I met along the course and afterwards to be able to say that this marathon was one from which I felt plenty of empowering love...I don't know how else to describe the experience.

Thank you my dear friends -- Jolene Jackson, Jan Tiderington, Amy Conger, Trish Taylor, Denise Manguson, Linda Doremus, Barbara Schaetti, and Yuki Kodera -- for your kind support for the Girls on The Run.

I also thank Kiyoko for letting me use her ultra-light digital camera, Kentaro for accommodating me in Chicago despite his ultra-busy work schedule, Rich for our totally unexpected reunion near Old Town that was rejuvenating, and Jennie my awesome dancing partner at the post-marathon Party for the spontaneity and fun!

Jottings:

Thanks to Jolene Jackson, I finally got to try the best way to travel to downtown Chicago -- drive to Michigan City (Carroll Ave. Station) and catch South Shore Line operated by NITCD.

It's hard to beat a package of 1.5 hour drive from Kalamazoo + 1.5 hour train ride for $7.55 (one way). As a bonus you can also shop at the Lighthouse Outlet on your way back. Here is a collection of photos showing you how to get to the Carroll Ave. Station.

I wish I had done this much sooner. Like everything else, I feel I am mastering things just as I get ready to leave for Japan.
